Touring sector bemoans COVID-19

The touring industry is having a torrid time due to the current COVID-19 pandemic. Many of the continent’s top tourist destinations have been heavily impacted from Victoria Falls, Antananarivo, Zanzibar, to Cairo amongst others.

According to Delina Alwanger,  Head of Market Research and Development at Ntsako Travel Africa, the pandemic has devastated the sector.

“The COVID-19 crisis has devastated the touring industry.  Even tourist destinations with a mature domestic market will struggle to get back to profitability.  Recovery will be slow.  It will take a sustained marketing campaign to attract international traffic.  This inevitably needs significant budgets which simply don’t exist  longer.

Moreso, borders have not yet opened universally.  They have been opened cautiously and selectively on a  basis in some parts of the world.

However, incentives that could have a positive impact are the suspension of Visa requirements, tax concessions for struggling operators, and above all,  maintaining strict health protocols as this is key in creating confidence,” said Alwanger.
